On the morning of October 18, SMIC Tianjin Company's capacity expansion project was officially launched. It will invest 1.5 billion US dollars in XEDA, to build the world's largest single 8-inch IC wafer production base. The construction of the project is another important milestone of Xiqing district and even Tianjin electronic information industry.
SMIC is the largest and most advanced IC chip manufacturer in mainland China, and settled in XEDA in 2003 as an important strategic base. It has been over 10 years since the establishment of SMIC Tianjin company, when the company developed with strong momentum and has made brilliant achievements. To ease the situation that the demand exceeds need in a long term, the company will increase its production capacity and investment this time. The new T2 and T3 production lines will be built on the existing 8-inch IC production line, which is expected to be put into use in 2018. After the completion of production capacity, the monthly production capacity will expand from the current 45,000 to 150,000. The main product is related to the Internet of things, fingerprint identification, power management, digital signal processing, automotive electronics, etc. According to the market development, the company also plans to start the third phase construction of the project in future and introduces the production of 12-inch chip.
